At last weekend’s Canadian Masters Championships at Claude Ferragne Stadium in Laval, Que., two runners inked their names in the national history books. In an impressive solo effort, 90-year-old Roger Davies<\/strong> of Alberta sliced more than a minute off the 12-year-old Canadian 1,500m mark, clocking 9:24.97 to take the national title. On the women’s side, in the W60 division, Alberta’s Janice Patterson\u00a0<\/strong>also had a record-breaking performance of 5:06.84\u2013shaving 12 seconds off the previous 1,500m best.<\/p>\n

The former men’s 1,500m mark of 10:27.28 has stood untouched since 2013, when it was set by B.C.’s Harry Thompson<\/strong>. Davies already holds the Canadian record in the M80 mile (6:59.57) and 20 provincial records for Alberta in multiple age groups, ranging from 800m to 10,000m.<\/p>\n

Patterson maintains her dominance<\/h2>\n

Sixty-one-year-old Patterson claimed a decisive victory over Ontario’s Jean Ferguson <\/strong>(6:03.87) and fellow Albertan Margot Glover\u00a0<\/strong>(6:14.61). Her\u00a05:06.84 crushed the former record of 5:18.59, which was set by New Brunswick’s Patty Blanchard<\/strong> in 2018.<\/p>\n

Similar to Davies, Patterson boasts an impressive resume. At March’s World Masters Association Indoor Championships in Gainesville, Fla., she raced to two more national W60 marks in the 800m and 1,500m, running 2:33.44 for the bronze medal and 5:15.76 for silver, respectively; in June, she went on to set the outdoor W60 800m Canadian record of 2:32.50.<\/p>\n
